The heat is known to make you just want to go to the beach, so why not take advantage of a nice day to hit the beach? The favourite destination for the locals is Portofino, only two hours from the city and a great compromise if you can't go very far. Of course it is famous for its beaches and the sea, but Portofino is also something else.

LA PIAZZETTA

The iconic piazzetta is the first thing you recognize about Portofino. Directly overlooking the small harbor, in this small square, you can find a little bit of everything from bars and restaurants to boutiques and shops.

SAN GIORGIO'S CHURCH

Starting from the small square and climbing up the promontory, you will come to this church. Built in 1154 and dedicated to the patron saint of the town, it was destroyed and rebuilt four times during its existence. It is definitely worth a visit.

BROWN CASTLE

Continuing the scenic walk along the peninsula, you will come to a castle. The name comes from Montague Yeats Brown, an English consul who owned the castle from 1867 to 1905. Today it is owned by the municipality, but private events can also be organised.

If you have decided to spend more than one day, you can also decide to travel to the surrounding area. For instance, just an 15-minute bus ride away is Santa Margherita Ligure, another important seaside destination, or with less than an hour by train you can also reach the Cinque Terre.

This concludes our brief guide on what you can do one day in Portofino, besides the simplest sunbathing and swimming. As always, let us know what you think and come back to visit.
